My work circles around the theme of healing. Different traces point toward it.
Everything leaves a trace.
The suture draws two edges together — without closing the gap. That is not a failure. That is the reality of healing.
I am clumsy with the needle. As so many injuries arise from clumsiness — in the material, between people. People are awkward with people. And yet: the desire to connect remains.
I take the wounded canvas into my hands. Through each material — paint, casein, surgical thread, paper — I try to express what does not fully heal. Distance that persists. Relationships that hurt because they are isolated. Two forms that remain close and still separate — tree and rock. Fruit in a still life, unconnected, without relation. A biography that manages its old injuries: minimising, decorating, silencing.
Casein as ground — a milk protein, what nourishes children — is applied in three layers, like the three layers of our skin. The canvas breathes. It becomes a second skin. Surgical material finds its use: the suture that elsewhere closes wounds closes here the tears in the fabric of the canvas. Sometimes it heals — sometimes the stitch remains visible.
Everything leaves a trace. Some traces carry further.
Anie Bonnet grew up in the ‚Bergisches Land‘ region in western Germany. She lives and works on Spiekeroog, in the Middle Rhine and in Frankfurt a. M.
